has always wanted. and good morning, america. hello to robin at home. josh is off today. it's great to have amy robach, and bill weir here, back from the inauguration. what a day it was yesterday, huh? >> good to be here. it was fun. >> a lot of excitement in washington yesterday. a lot of energy there, as the president gave his speech. walking up the capitol steps. and look at what was happening out on the mall. almost a million people out on the mall. not as many as four years ago. and the president, trying to savor every moment yesterday. his family, as well, was having a lot of fun. especially during that parade. there we see -- that's malia, right? there's malia, doing instagram. and sasha, as well. they were having fun chewing gum. they were going to enjoy this day yesterday. they certainly did.

today, the work begins for the president's second term. >> gum, lip gloss and cell phones. average teens and tweens, right. we also have some astonishing video from overnight. a terrifying moment during the afternoon commute. this woman here, she faints right on to the track. look at that. oh. she's okay. but wait until you hear how she was rescued. wow. >> it's scary to watch. a real hero there. and we're so excited. jennifer lopez is taking over our second hour. you do not want to miss that. it's going to be spicy. >> all right. we might need some spice. we have some very cold temperatures, dangerous temperatures, actually, freezing much of the united states right now. sam is tracking the very latest for us. sam? >> yeah, anything that will warm you up. 19 states, by the way, from north dakota, to north carolina, all the way into maine, have these advisories, these windchill advisories. look at it. international falls at 38 below zero. that's the way it feels right now. charleston, came up to one degree from zero. over the past couple of hours. pittsburgh, good morning. it feels like it's seven below this morning. and new york, step outside.

it feels like it's in the single digits. here's this cold air. basically the idea here is, some of this cold air will drop in the south. as it came in, it had enough punch with these winds and a little bit of snow to snarl traffic and cause some big accidents, in just about one-quarter of the country. take a look. overnight, arctic air and blowing snow made for treacherous travel for the northeastern quarter of the nation. in ohio, three major pileups. more than 150 cars, trucks and tractor-trailers, slamming into each other in whiteout conditions. >> these cars just kept coming. we're sitting there, at the mercy of god. and this guy just hit us head-on. >> reporter: and this massive crash in cincinnati. 86 cars in all, left a 12-year-old girl dead. further north in cleveland, howling polar winds sent this 200-year-old tree crashing into a home. the same winds whipped up winds on lake erie.

and caused blizzard conditions on parts of lake michigan. >> you can't see in front of you. you can't see the cars. >> reporter: in pontiac, michigan, the roof of the silverdome was under renovation. this morning, it's in tatters. shredded by winds. bitter windchills in places like fargo, north dakota, again, reached 35 degrees below zero on monday. and this cold air is spreading south and east. >> i'm definitely ready for the sun. >> this cold air is in place. it came in with the strong winds. so the question now is, how far south does it go? over the next 24 hours, we'll get as far south as atlanta. there will be some frost and freeze warnings down in north florida, as well. a pocket of cold air that goes to the deep south and seems to last. >> a lot of the country affected. sam, thanks very much. we're going to turn to president obama, now, and what's in store for the second term after yesterday's inaugural. the speech, a call to action. and uncompromising annunciation of liberal principles. the question, now, what can get done on those big issues like gun control, gay rights, and climate change?

abc's jon karl joins us from the white house. liberals were cheering yesterday. republicans, not so much. >> reporter: that's right, george. the president has set the tone for his second term. he went big. he went lofty. he went ambitious. and he went unmistakably liberal. over and over, president obama echos his campaign slogan. >> together. together we discover. together. >> reporter: with that, he invited all americans to celebrate the changing landscape of american culture. >> we have always understood that when times change, so must we. but preserving our individual freedoms ultimately requires collective action. >> reporter: he unapologetically laid out a progressive agenda. promising discussion on climate change, fighting poverty, equal

pay for women, and immigration. >> centuries-long debate about the role of government of all-time. but it does require us to act in our time. >> reporter: and for the first time ever in an inaugural address, the president specifically mentioned gay rights. >> our journey is not complete until our gay brothers and sisters are treated like anyone else under the law. for, if we are truly created equal, then surely the love we commit to one another, must be equal, as well. >> reporter: but obama, four years ago, talked about the audacity of hope, now gives a nod to reality. reminding his most fervent supporters that progress requires compromise. >> we must act knowing that our work will be imperfect. we must act knowing that today's victories will be only partial. >> reporter: before he headed back into the capitol, president obama stopped to look in awe at that amazing view of the national mall. >> take a look one more time. i'm not going to see this again. >> reporter: afterwards, the obama family took in the parade in a decidedly less formal way.

dancing, snapping photos. and even chewing gum. and while all those hundreds of thousands of people who filled the mall have now helped president obama win his last campaign, the last campaign he says he will ever run, he's still counting on their support building a grassroots organization to get things done. and let's get to the balls now. and the show-stopping moment when the first lady stepped out in that red gown, dancing to jennifer hudson, singing one of the president's favorites. cecilia vega was there for the whole show. ♪ listen, i >> reporter: on stage, the president mouthed the words. ♪ i'm so in love with you >> reporter: to a song he knows oh, so, well. this time, he left the inaugural-size serenade to none other than jennifer hudson.

the first couple dancing cheek to cheek. and the first lady, stunning in a ruby red jason wu gown. and like four years ago, the obamas turned to a who's who of popular performers. this is the hottest ticket in all of washington. we've got one. let's check out this party. from alicia keys, who put a presidential twist on her hit song. ♪ obama's on fire >> reporter: to other a-listers, like brad paisley and stevie wonder. ♪ very superstitious >> reporter: so what's the review on the first lady's dress? >> amazing. beautiful. >> reporter: this year, instead of ten balls, just two. in one room, more than 30,000 people dancing the night away, from sea to shining sea, of sequins. in another, the party went on military style, at the commander in chief's ball. >> you all dress up pretty nice.

getting therapy. and paying one priest a secret salary after allegedly getting a teenager pregnant. overseas, a new sign that syrian dictator, bashar al assad, losing power. russia evacuating citizens from that country. fighting between government and rebel forces is intensifying today in the capital of damascus. frightening happening at the evening commute. a woman fainted on to the tracks. frightening to see her go limp, just as a train is approaching the station, in spain. with the approaching oncoming train there, a police officer -- an off-duty police officer jumps on to the tracks. is able to carry her to the far side, as frantic passengers yell for the train to stop. she was fine. checked out okay. but startling video to see. and more trouble this morning for blockbuster video. the parent company is closing 300 of the chain's 800 rental stores nationwide, cutting 3,000 jobs. trying to focus on selling video streaming services. and gather around, kids. as the snow falls, we'll get a lesson now in asymmetrical

warfare. courtesy of mischievous ruffians in england, who thought it would be hilarious to launch snowballs at a passing fireboat. i believe it was sun tsu, who said never bring a snowball to a firehose fight. >> oh, wow. >> that will teach you. >> that had to be cold. >> and that's reaffirming many little boys' desire to become a fireman. look at that. >> so much for david and goliath. >> that's right. >> thank you, bill. >> thank you, bill. now to the latest harrowing details coming out about the hostage crisis in north africa. we have an exclusive interview with the wife of one american who narrowly escaped death, hiding from the terrorists for more than two days. >> reporter: it was four days of terror, seen in these first videos from inside, recorded by one of the hostages. and broadcast by algerian tv. based on official accounts, at least 37 of these men were either executed by the terrorists or killed in rescue attempts. three of them, american. gordon lee rowan, from oregon. and frederick buttaccio and victor lovelady from texas.

>> we asked him all the time, do you feel safe? do you feel safe going? if you don't feel safe, don't go. he said, oh, i feel safe. nothing's happened there for so long. >> reporter: among the americans able to get out, was steven wysocki of colorado. whose wife told clayton sandell, of his harrowing tale. >> my feeling of it is he's been to hell and back. >> reporter: his wife says her husband hid from the terrorists in his office at the gas plant, often under his desk, before making a run for it. >> he was there, in hiding, for about two and a half days. was within two or three feet of some of the terrorists at times. some of his friends didn't make it. there were a couple of times where he said he truly thought he was going to die. >> reporter: the leader of the al qaeda group behind the attack is now the number one target in a rapidly expanding u.s./french military operation near his base, in the african country of mali, where the first transport planes were put into action on monday.

officials say the attackers were heavily armed with sophisticated weapons. and their leader has threatened more attacks against american and european targets in the area soon. george? >> brian, thank you. we have a consumer alert now. an abc news exclusive look at a new report that shows how many of the foods we buy may not be what we're paying for. filled with cheap substitutes instead of the real thing. abc's jim avila has the story. >> reporter: it's what we expect as shoppers. >> i think that anything they put in there should be listed on the ingredients label. >> reporter: but a new scientific troll down the grocery aisle, by the nonprofit food detectives, usp, discovered rising numbers of fake ingredients in products from olive oil, to spices, to fruit juice. in a new database to be released tomorrow, and obtained by abc news this morning, usp warns consumers the fda and manufacturers, that the amount of food fraud they found is up

60% over last year. among the most popular targets, for unscrupulous food suppliers, pomegranate juice, which is often diluted with grape or pear juice. >> pomegranate juice is a high-value ingredient. high-priced ingredient. and adulteration appears to be widespread. >> reporter: in fact, liquid and ground foods in general are the easiest to tamper with. from olive oil, which is often diluted with cheaper oil, and lemon juice. often cheapened with water and sugar. to tea, diluted with fillers like lawn grass or fern leaves. and spices like paprika, adulterated with dangerous food colorings. >> there are synthetic dyes, industrial dyes that mimic that color nicely. >> reporter: also on the list, seafood. number one on the list, white tuna or albacore, on sushi menus. but it's really escolar, an oily fish that can cause stomach problems. >> there's absolutely a public

health risk. and key is, people unauthorized to handle this product, are probably not following good manufacturing practices. >> reporter: the fda and grocery manufacturers tell abc news, they take this scientific survey seriously and are monitoring fake food. what can you do? the experts say buy whole food, rather than ground up teas, spice and coffee. it's more difficult to fake. and buy food from brands that have an interest in repeat customers and no interest in fooling you. companies you trust. george? >> that's good advice, jim. you can see more of jim's report on "world news" and "nightline." now, take a look at this incredible picture. a boulder crashed into the bedroom of a utah woman in the middle of the night, while she was sleeping. she's certainly lucky to be alive this morning. and abc's nick watt has her story. >> reporter: there it is. 12 feet by 9 feet, by 9. maybe 50 tons of solid rock, smashing through your bedroom wall at 3:00 a.m. think about it.

scott's wife, wanda, was home alone when that happened. >> i felt a weight of guilt of not being there. but the more i processed it, had i been here in bed, she would have died. >> reporter: wanda survived by leaping on to scott's empty side of the bed. luck? fluke? fortune? scott was at their son's house that night. if he had been home, wanda would have been crushed by his side. neighbors woke to wanda's screams, a cracked sternum and a major gash and a broken jaw. >> with her jaw wired shut, i'm probably not going to get the full story for a couple of weeks. >> reporter: the denhalters just moved in last month. they liked the shade from that ridge. but -- >> i said, i'm a little leery of the ridge line. a boulder could come crashing down the hill. and come through our house. >> reporter: what dislodged the boulder is unclear. some say they heard running water up there. others blame the cold weather. here's one of the neighbors. >> i would not live on that side of the street. >> reporter: a lot of us imagine we'll die in bed one day. but not like this. a rude awakening, a bump in the night, doesn't even begin to

little charlie. >> oh. he's just 3. >> 3 with a boa around his neck. >> with a snake. this is the video that george had to explain to me this morning. i don't know. can you do this? two men are trying to figure out the pain of childbirth. ladies, is this possible? >> no. >> this may be more controversial than snakes on a child. >> never, ever, ever. >> the stomach is not -- >> the first response. we're going to switch gears right now because we have the trial of the former minister accused of killing his wife. arthur schumer is in court for the death of his second wife. abc's alex marquardt has the latest. >> reporter: heading into court, authur shurmur remained calm. >> what compelled you to testify? >> reporter: once on the stand on friday, collected and showing little emotion, he unequivocally denied any role in the death of

his second wife, betty, in 2008. prosecutors have painted a damming picture, saying shurmur bludgeoned her. i didn't stage an event. betty began to undo her seat belt, he said. as she did so, a deer came out to the right. we then made it to the guardrail. the 63-year-old former methodist pastor, said he was alone, lost and scared at the hospital, where he asked doctors to take betty off of life support. he told jurors that the decision was agonizing and that he wanted her to live. the next day, he had her cremated. the investigation into betty's death sparked another mysterious 1999 death of his first wife, jewel. shurmur said she fell down a flight of stairs while vacuuming. prosecutors now believe he beat her to death, as well. >> you look at jewel shurmur. she has two strikes to the right side of her head. a long, cylinder object. betty shurmur, she has two strikes to the right side of her head. all right? and lacerations looked similar. and the patterns look similar.

>> reporter: once this trial ends, he'll stand trial for jewel's murder. he's pled not guilty. >> if he's found not guilty in this case, it will embolden him to think he will be found not guilty again in the other case. if he's found guilty in this case, tough to know whether it night lead him to be more likely to try to enter into some sort of plea. >> reporter: as soon as closing arguments are done this morning, we expect the jury to begin deliberating as early as this afternoon. at the center of the debate will be shurmur's performance, which was said to be emotionless. he told the jury, he's not crying on the outside, but on the inside. now, to prince harry, out of afghanistan, after a four-month military tour. the 28-year-old, speaking out in an unprecedented interview, with no topic off-limits, including what you're seeing right there. the moment in the middle of the interview, when he was called back on duty. abc's lama hasan has the story. ♪

the game, i suppose. >> reporter: and there's the reminder that he is, well, a prince. a week after harry arrived, the base was attacked on his birthday. and the media and military started to re-evaluate whether their most famous member really could be kept safe. >> obviously, the papers were like, oh, this is all against me. no one really knows. the guys dealt with it really well. and it was on my birthday. it was a reality check. >> reporter: life away on the front lines has its drawbacks. william and kate announced their pregnancy when harry was away. >> i'm thrilled for both of them. it's about time. i can't wait to be an uncle. >> reporter: and sometimes the press gets it really wrong, which is harry's big beef. >> i didn't send a letter of congratulations by most of the papers. i spoke to my brother and her. both very well. and both very happy, obviously. >> reporter: the press has always been a thorn in harry and williams' side. >> come on. >> my father doesn't read it.
